Independent Games Summit: Indie Games and Our Queer, Sex-Positive Revolution
That our mainstream media bombard us with very specific ideas about gender, sexual freedom, erotic desire, and queerness is not a new observation. Neither is the fact that this sort of messaging bleeds into our gaming spaces and has been doing so from the start. Recently, we've been seeing an increasing degree of resistance to such outdated ideas, especially in the indie scene and particularly in the world of analogue games.nnIn this talk, Sharang Biswas explores the power of interactivity to discuss sexuality and queerness. Topics discussed include how roleplaying allows people to explore sexualities and genders, what algorithmic representations of romance can convey, and how analogue games are uniquely positioned to allow participants to explore such topics meaningfully. Examples of games that play with sexuality in unusual ways and how they can help us with our design process will also be presented.
